Twenty-Four

Brunswick, Georgia

Winter called back just before eleven. Reed and Turk had spent the morning in the pines, resting and recharging the best they could while the pressure of Georgia’s manhunt hung over Reed’s mind like a boulder, ready to crush him at any minute.

Reed took the call, stepping deeper into the trees. “Winter?”

“I found the bank. Holiday held accounts with four financial institutions, but only one of them has a safety deposit box on record for him.”

“Here in Brunswick?”

“Fortunately, yes. Brunswick First National. It’s a community institution with six branches scattered around the county.”

“Which one is the box housed at?”

“Main branch, downtown. About two miles from Holiday’s house.”

Keeping secrets close.

“And the number?”

“I couldn’t get the number. I’m sorry.”

Reed ran a hand over his face, brushing away dirt and a trace of dried blood from God knew where. He thought about how rough he looked, to say nothing about how publicized his face had become over the last twelve hours. How the hell was he going to sneak into a bank and access a dead man’s safety deposit box, all without knowing the box number or being arrested?

“Reed?”

“Yeah?”

“Do you have a plan?”

Reed looked back through the trees to Turk. He thought about bank regulations and what circumstances mandated that a third party be given access to a box. There must be loopholes.

“No,” Reed admitted, “but I’ll figure it out. What’s the update from everyone else?”

“Lucy and Kelly are en route to Atlanta. Maggie spoke with the U.S. attorney, and my understanding is that it went well.”

“Good. That’s what we want. Turk and I will look into the box, then we all need to rendezvous someplace safe to examine the evidence. Any thoughts?”

“Amadou’s been working on that. He found a place in Marion County, just east of Columbus. Looks to be an old mechanic’s shop for a peanut farm, but the property deed has been caught up in probate court for years, so it’s currently abandoned. Should be nice and quiet.”

“Great. Notify the others, and send me the address. We’ll see you tonight.”

Reed walked back to the clearing and drained a bottle of water while Turk slouched against a tree, waiting.

“Well?” Turk said.

Reed twisted the cap back on the bottle and cocked his head. “You ever rob a bank?”
